Our Honest Opinion
The research into probiotics has had mixed results since we’re only starting to understand the role that microorganisms carry out in our body and what they do for our health. Because the microorganisms that live in our digestive tract outnumber our own body cells by 10:1, it means we’re only 10% human! There is no doubt that probiotics play a crucial part in our immune defence and have an important role in the digestion of our food. There have been studies showing that taking probiotics may be beneficial for a host of digestive conditions, and more evidence is emerging in the role they play in taming inflammation and regulating immunity.
Probiotics reduce the incidence of diarrhoea
There have been studies showing that administration of probiotics reduces the incidence and duration of diarrhoea in infants, antibiotic-associated diarrhoea and Clostridium difficile infections. There is also work showing that taking probiotics on vacation can help with travellers’ diarrhoea.
Probiotics can ease the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
IBS is a widespread condition occurring in 10-20% of the UK population, and involves recurrent abdominal pain and diarrhoea or constipation, often associated with stress, depression, anxiety or previous intestinal infection. In a study carried out at King’s College, London, it was found that probiotics significantly improved symptoms and the severity of symptoms for the people with IBS who took part in the trial.
Probiotics reduce intestinal inflammation
In a study of patients suffering from the inflammatory bowel condition ulcerative colitis, researchers recorded that inflammation reduced by significant levels after the patients were given a daily supplementation of probiotics.
Probiotics help with skin conditions
It has been found that supplementing probiotics and helping repopulate the gut with good bacteria may help reduce the inflammation that triggers skin conditions. There is evidence that beneficial bacteria help with skin conditions such as rosacea, acne and eczema.
