Our Honest Opinion
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published numerous scientific opinions on the importance of vitamin C and zinc for good skin health. The human body doesn’t absorb collagen as a whole but breaks it down into amino acids that are used where needed. Taking a collagen supplement can prompt your body directly to produce more collagen by providing a bioavailable source of the necessary amino acids.
Vitamin C helps your body make collagen
As we have mentioned, our bodies can produce their own collagen. But as we age we produce less collagen and lose it faster. We need vitamin C to make our own collagen so getting a good supply is vital. Remember, smoking depletes our vitamin C levels, so try to avoid it. Good food sources of vitamin C include, among others, blackcurrants, broccoli, peppers and kiwis.
Zinc benefits our hair and nails too
As well as being a vital nutrient for skin health, we also know that zinc benefits the condition of our hair and nails. This is because zinc is needed for the proper growth and maintenance of the body as a whole. It is found in several systems and biological reactions throughout our body, and even helps our immune system function.
Zinc contributes to the maintenance of skin
Zinc is one of the most important nutrients for skin health and is often be found in skin supplements as well as skin creams. Research shows people with skin problems such as acne often have low zinc levels. Good food sources include crab, lobster, beans, nuts and seeds.
Collagen is important for youthful-looking skin
Collagen is found in the middle layer of our skin. It’s what makes skin feel firm. But as we age, we lose collagen and our skin becomes thinner, drier and more crepe-like. One of the consequences of a weaker skin structure caused by reduced collagen is wrinkles. Plus because older skin has less elastin to allow it to snap back, it can start to sag and develop stretch marks too. Remember, collagen production isn’t just affected by age, it can also be the result of a poor diet, gut imbalances and stress.
